Arabic Translations Associate
Middle East and North Africa and Communications Divisions
(Beirut, Amman, or Tunis Office Preferred)

The Middle East and North Africa Division and the Communications Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Arabic Translations Associate. The position will support HRW online, one of the world’s premier sources of human rights information. This position is part-time at 20 hours per week (50% schedule) during the evenings and requires availability to work occasional weekends. This position is preferably based in Tunis, Beirut or Amman but other MENA locations and Turkey will be considered, pending security considerations. The Associate reports to the Translations Coordinator based in Beirut.
Responsibilities:
Support translation requests and ensure a smooth work flow and respect of deadlines;
Coordinate, edit, and vet translations (English to Arabic and Arabic to English) for accuracy; Keep daily record of translations and track how many words per day the Arabic translation process can produce at any given time;
Liaise with freelance translators and provide translators with feedback;
Update HRW’s Arabic language glossary and translation memory system, providing translators with updated lexicons of legal international human rights law and international humanitarian law terminology to ensure homogeneity of terms;
Translate urgent short documents and texts (invitations, report blurbs, captions, letters);
Process invoices and attain approval from managers;
Maintain communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;
Work with the Multimedia Division to translate photo essay captions and video subtitles in a timely manner; and
Carry out any other tasks as required.
Duration: Fixed-term employment to start immediately through June 30, 2018.
Hours: The Associate is expected to work Monday to Friday for four hours every day between the hours of 3 PM and 10 PM GMT. Availability to work occasional Saturdays and Sundays is required.
Qualifications:
Education: A degree in Arabic translation, journalism, social sciences, international relations, Middle Eastern studies, or relevant studies is required.
Experience: A minimum of one year of directly related experience in translations is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic are required; excellent knowledge of classical Arabic grammar is required; working knowledge of French is a plus.
Demonstrated experience with translating material from English to Arabic and vice versa is required and experience with translation workflows is desirable.
Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required; excellent editing and proofreading skills in Arabic is required; ability to apply a standardized style guide is essential.
Strong online/Microsoft Office skills are required.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple tasks are required.
Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required.
Ability to recognize editorial opportunities is required.
Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.
Experience working on a Content Management System e.g., Drupal or publishing to a website is preferred.
Experience in writing legal content is a plus.
A broad range of knowledge about human rights and international affairs is desirable.
Other: Applicants for this position must be legally authorized to work (e.g., citizenship, valid work permit, etc.) in the country in which they are based for a minimum of one year from start date.
