Overview
Village Health Works (VHW) was established as a 501 (c) (3) organization in 2006 with the goal of addressing social justice issues in rural Burundi through the provision of high quality health care, education, and economic development opportunities. VHW works across five thematic areas (Health, Education, Economic Development, Food Security, and Community Engagement) to improve local livelihoods and restore dignity and hope to hundreds of thousands.
The VHW Education Program currently operates within a Memorandum of Understanding with the Burundian Ministry of Education to provide continual teacher professional development and student support services to the local Kigutu Primary and Secondary School and adjacent preschool.
VHW is currently undergoing a rapidly expanding education portfolio, including the design and development of a teacher-training program and an independent international secondary school (Kigutu International Academy). Therefore, VHW seeks an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher whose primary job is to provide English language instruction to a cohort of eight content-specific Kigutu Secondary School teachers who will eventually transition to teaching at the Kigutu International Academy. The long-term goal of this position is to build the teachers’ capacity to ultimately teach their respective subjects in English. In addition, other small groups of English language learners may form on campus and if time allows, this position will be expected to accommodate.
The ESOL instructor will report directly to the VHW Education Program Manager and work closely with the manager and Education and Training Coordinator to elaborate and teach the first term (5 months) of a 10-month accelerated English course. The position will be based in Kigutu, Burundi full-time. The volunteer will receive round trip transportation to Burundi, food and housing, and a small monthly stipend.
