Lebanon: Community Mental Health Nurse

1.Function as a member of the Community Mental Health Team:

▪ Work well within a multidisciplinary CMH team on the mental health concerns of all community members in need.

▪ Provide organized weekly reporting on all clinical activities and collected data in accordance with CMHC policies and procedures.

▪ Actively participate in weekly internal MDT meetings.

▪ When required, participate in meetings with key actors.

▪ When required, participate in mental health and psychosocial support coordination meetings for the Bekaa.

2.Complete the appropriate intake, assessment, and ongoing monitoring in accordance with CMHC policies and procedures for each psychiatric consultation:

▪ Complete the nurse intake on all first visits to the CMHC psychiatrist.

▪ Act as a resource for patients on all medication (primarily psychotropic) related concerns and questions

▪ Act as a resource for patients on all general medical and mental health issues

▪ Conduct targeted evaluations concerning medication adherence and side effects on all subsequent visits.

▪ Assist in the assessment of mental health needs, propose appropriate interventions, and collaborate with other CMH team members in the development and implementation of each person’s MH care/recovery plan.

▪ Provide appropriate psychosocial support to all beneficiaries.

▪ When necessary, visit the patient’s place of residence to administer medication.

▪ Provide timely follow-up on medication and referral issues.

▪ Manage the reserve of medication during times when the PHC/SDC pharmacy is closed.

▪ Be able to effectively manage crises when patient or family member is agitated, aggressive, or highly distressed.

3.Be a source of knowledge and support for beneficiaries on all general medical, mental health, and medication-related issues:

▪ Provide beneficiaries and families/cares with education on relevant medical concerns

▪ Provide beneficiaries and families/carers with education on relevant mental health issues

▪ Ensure that beneficiaries and families/carers are familiar with each medication they are currently taking, including what the medication is used for, how it should be administered, what the most common side effects are, and what to do if the patient feels they are experiencing a side effect.

4.Community mental health interventions:

▪ Participate in defining effective and culturally appropriate approaches and interventions at the community level.

▪ In coordination with the mental health team, prepare and conduct mental health awareness raising sessions in the CMH clinic, PHC/SDC, and throughout the community.

▪ In coordination with the mental health team, develop evidence-based mental health interventions at the community level.

▪ In collaboration with the mental health team, explore and detect potential risk factors influencing mental health status of the target population.

▪ As needed, act as a resource for the mental health support groups.

▪ Be an advocate for better mental health services and rights of persons with mental health conditions

▪ In collaboration with the mental health team, help develop and implement preventive mental health interventions and activities to be undertaken within the PHC/SDC and the wider community.
