medica mondiale e. V. is an international aid and women’s rights organisation supporting women and girls in war and conflict regions. medica mondiale provides medical consultation, psychosocial and legal counselling and protection as well as programmes promoting the generation of income – both through its own projects and in co-operation with local women’s organisations. At a political level, medica mondiale actively advocates the enforcement of women’s rights and interests and demands consistent punishment of crimes as well as effective protection, justice and political ownership for women survivors of violence.

For our Regional Office in Burundi we are advertising the position of

Regional Representative (female)

Background

In the Great Lakes Region, medica mondiale focuses on strengthening independent women’s organisations. Since 2004, local partner organisations have been supported mainly through small grants. In order to provide support more effectively and to increase collaboration with relevant stakeholders, medica mondiale opened a regional office in Bujumbura/ Burundi in 2015. This office has no implementing role but is focussing on strengthening local capacities of partner organisations and of psychosocial professionals. For the following 2 years, the Regional Representative will be responsible for:

  1. Running the regional office ( 2 permanent staff, technical staff on consultancy basis)

  2. Implement a Support Programme to women’s organisations working on conflict related SGBV in South Kivu and Burundi

  3. Further Building of a roster of local trauma experts

  4. Identification of future programmes

Project setup

Duty station of the Regional Representative is Burundi (security permitting), relocation to Rwanda/DRC might be necessary. The position requires frequent travel to field locations mostly situated in South Kivu (bordering Lake Tanganyika).

Position summary

The Head of Mission represents medica mondiale to stakeholders and partners in the Great Lakes Region notably Burundi, DRC, Rwanda and Uganda. She acts as an advisor to the current partner organizations, identifies new partners and opportunities for intervention and ensures that programmes runs smoothly and effectively. She reports to the Head of Programmes and liaises with the Great Lakes Desk at Head Office. She cooperates effectively and diplomatically with partners and governmental structures and other stakeholders. She informs mm head office (mmHO) on political and security related developments in the region and provides input for planning both on a programmatic/strategic and an operational level.

The Regional Representative possesses initiative, leadership and interpersonal skills. She is organized and self-reliant. She has a passion to build local capacities and to connect people with a strong background in organizational development focusing both on operational and organizational structures. She is able to analyse contexts from a feminist perspective and has an empowering and inclusive approach.

Key responsibilities

  • Running the regional office, consisting of one international expert, one local General Support Officer (finance, admin and logistics) and technical staff on consultancy basis;

  • Ensure administrative, finance and HR management in line with medica mondiale procedures;

  • Liaise with relevant actors and represent medica mondiale to national and international stakeholders and bodies;

  • Implement a support programme to women’s organisations working on conflict related SGBV in South Kivu and Burundi through advisory services to partners, practical organisation of capacity development activities and building a roster of local trauma experts;

  • Identify opportunities and partners for new programmes and contribute to resource mobilisation;

  • Participate in medica mondiale’s strategic and operational planning;

  • Monitor the security situation in South Kivu and Burundi and ensure implementation of the medica mondiale security policy and participate in reviewing it;

  • Report according to standards in a timely, effective manner.

Experience/knowledge and skills

  • Knowledge and experience in organisational development regarding both operational and organisational structures;

  • Knowledge and experience in providing advice / coaching to local organisations in rural African settings;

  • Profound knowledge of the different forms and consequences of violence against women and sexualised war and post-war violence, and of women’s rights ;

  • Demonstrated track record in financial, administrative and HR management, including security, logistics, and operations;

  • Experience in project work, i.e. PCM, proposal writing and budgeting and managing donors-implementers relationships, both from an implementers and a donor’s perspective;

  • Excellent command of the English and French language combined with strong writing skills;

  • Working experience and a personal network in the Great Lakes is an important asset.

    Personal Skills

  • Feminist background and a clear commitment to work with a women centred and empowering approach;

  • Ability to work in an independent and self-contained way, while maintaining reliable communication and working relations with both, Head office, remote staff and partner organisations;

  • Stress-resilient, flexible, courageous;

  • Strong communications, interpersonal and inter-cultural skills: ability to communicate with actors from the grassroots to the national level, both governmental and non-governmental.
