The Paung Sie Facility (PSF) wishes to contract editorial services for a forthcoming publication on civil society and peacebuilding in Myanmar. The Editor will undertake a structural, stylistic and a copy edit of the paper to ensure the document is of high professional standard and ready for release into the public domain.
1. BACKGROUND
The Paung Sie Facility’s goal is to enhance social cohesion in Myanmar by supporting locally driven, catalytic initiatives and ideas. The PSF has commissioned a paper to analyse the status of civil society vis-à-vis peacebuilding in Myanmar. This paper, once published, will be part of the PSF’s Contributions to Sustainable Peace Series. Two other papers are part of this series and can be found here.
2. PURPOSE
The purpose of this consultancy is to conduct a professional structural, stylistic and copy edit of a forthcoming PSF publication on civil society and peacebuilding in Myanmar. It is expected that the consultant will elevate the overall quality of the paper to ensure it is of high professional standard.
3. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The consultant will conduct the following tasks:
a. Structural and substantive editing:
- Reducing length of publication by shortening and removing excess text (following PSF guidance and direction)
- Clarifying and/or reorganizing content to ensure it follows a logical flow
b. Stylistic editing:
- Ensuring language accessible and concise (i.e. eliminating jargon, ensuring sentences clear)
- Smoothing language and other non-mechanical line-by-line editing
c. Copy editing:
- Ensuring UK English used consistently across document
- Editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation and other mechanics of style
- Checking for consistency of mechanics and internal consistency of facts
- Ensuring acronym list and first acronym use consistent across document
- Cross-checking all headings and other cross references in document
- Editing all citations to ensure they all PSF’s style guide (includes adding hyperlink where possible to all references)
4. DELIVERABLES
The consultant will deliver:
- An edited document marked up using track changes and comment boxes in MS word
This deliverable shall be prepared in English and submitted to PSF and electronically via e-mail
5. TIMETABLE OF ACTIVITIES
The consultancy is for up to 10 days, due to take place in mid May 2018 with a deadline to submit the edited paper by 25 May 2018. The consultant can either be based in Yangon or work remotely.
6. REPORTING
The consultancy work will be overseen by the PSF’s Inclusion and Analysis Adviser. All consultants will sign the NIS code of conduct and NIS Child Safeguarding Professional Behaviours document.
7. CONSULTANCY REQUIREMENTS
The consultancy should be conducted by a professional Editor with the following qualifications and experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of professional editorial experience, specifically with conducting substantive, stylistic and copy editing
- Professional editing accreditation and/or advanced degree in writing
- Experience editing policy and NGO reports on issues related to peace and security
- Understanding of Myanmar context preferred but not required
- Demonstrated ability to deliver quality results within deadlines
- High standards of integrity, professionalism, and impartiality
- Excellent written and spoken English
